Cedars for the Next Century - restoration event

Location:
Millard Learning Centre
Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada

Date & Time:
June 9, 2023 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (Local Timezone)

Event Summary:

The Chrystal Creek watershed at the Millard Learning Centre has been heavily modified over the past century through drainage, logging, soil compaction, livestock grazing, agriculture, and road construction. In 2021, the Galiano Conservancy began restoring healthy native forest and wetland ecosystems across 12 hectares of the watershed. Treatments include removal of drainage ditches, decompaction of soils, wetland creation, and replanting with native species. After only three years, many native species, including the red-listed northern red-legged frogs, have moved into the wetland and native vegetation is establishing. This volunteer event will continue work in the watershed, including introduced species management, vegetation monitoring, and native plant care.
