The annual Arbor Day planting at Waiwhakareke is a key date for this ambitious ecological restoration project. Launched in 2004, Arbor Day planting at Waiwhakareke has grown significantly, with more than 2500 people taking part in 2019. It is the largest community planting day in the city. Arbor Day at Waiwhakareke is popular with school groups and businesses. For teachers it's a chance to get children out of the classroom and into the natural environment for a different kind of learning. Each year around 20,000 plants are planted by the community, local businesses and the project partners as we work towards planting the remaining 32 hectares of Waiwhakareke in native species representing pre-European vegetation.
The event goes ahead rain or shine, with light refreshments provided. Volunteers are urged to come well-equipped with spades, shovels, and wearing suitable clothing and footwear for Hamilton's winter.
The event will adhere to the NZ government's covid 19 regulations: https://covid19.govt.nz/traffic-lights/life-at-orange/gatherings-at-orange/
