Invasive English holly has become a very significant problem in natural areas of the Pacific Northwest. Metchosin Invasive Species Cooperative is partnering with the Capital Regional District to remove invasive species in Matheson Lake / Roche Cove Parks. Our current focus is on English holly. The vast majority of the holly stems presently can be removed by hand or with Pullerbears. To date, we have pulled approximately 6,355 holly in six pulls. We are currently working in what we believe is the most heavily infested part of the park(s), however, there are patches of holly throughout the park(s).
Meet at the main Matheson Lake parking lot. This time of year there are a lot more people visiting the park. Though this has not yet been confirmed, the CRD expect to reserve us 6-8 parking spots at the far end of the parking lot.
Please wear gloves and any other safety gear you feel would be appropriate. Please bring any tools you feel may be useful. We will have several Pullerbears at the site.
All volunteers working in CRD parks need to be registered as volunteers with the CRD.
